First, reading between the lines, they are indeed fighting spam – because AI makes it so easy to mass publish a lot of content – content that actually sounds good, is just very “generic” and doesn’t add anything new to the internet, because it’s written by AI and is just rehashing what already exists.
So to address this, Google really doubled down on all the things they claim to prioritize: “quality content”, “useful content”, “original content”, UX and EEAT… …but a lot of really “good” sites got hit pretty hard in the process. My personal take on this is that I don't think Google is trying to do anything particularly sinister.
