The major search engines only want secure connections. After all, they want to deliver the best search results; site security is simply part of that.

Since they can't actually force webmasters to switch to https, they use simpler but effective methods. Since January 1, 2017, unencrypted pages have been consistently marked as "Insecure" in browsers such as Chrome, Firefox, and MS Edge.
