Peter Salovey and John D. Mayer in their 1990 article “Emotional Intelligence” first defined this concept as:

“ the ability to monitor one's own and others' feelings and emotions, to distinguish among them, and to use this information to guide one's thoughts and actions .”

According to the two authors, it is composed of three different capacities:

This definition was then updated in 1997, to also include the missing concepts related to feelings, stating that it involves: ' the ability to perceive, appraise and express an emotion; the ability to access and/or create feelings when they facilitate thoughts; the ability to understand emotion and emotional knowledge; the ability to regulate emotions to promote emotional and intellectual growth .'

It is clear, therefore, that emotional intelligence is a very broad topic italy email list and can have many implications.

In fact, it can be applied everywhere, from the private sphere to the working one, and it is fundamental for living a happy life.

The reason is very simple: if you can understand what your feelings and moods are, you can do something to change them instead of passively going along with them.

Have you ever been anxious about something?

In some cases, anxiety is useful, it can help you perform better or make fewer mistakes; but if you don't recognize it and don't know how to manage it, anxiety can lead to panic, a state that should always be avoided because it rarely brings positive consequences.

Emotions, if not managed, can be harmful and emotional intelligence is used to start knowing yourself better and understand how to manage yourself in various situations. All this, in the long term, can lead to drastic changes in your character and overall improvements in your life.
