Bringing your website up to Google's standards is the best way to avoid (and prevent) a penalty.
The best way to do this is to read Google's Webmaster Guidelines in full and strive to apply them almost verbatim.
(No joke, you never know how Google might interpret them! It's better to be safe than sorry.)
