New platforms in election campaigns: TikTok

Post by Bappy11 »

Facebook, Twitter and Instagram were also used extensively by parties in the previous elections. This campaign is no different. Some parties have also made clever use of TikTok. GroenLinks and VVD in particular are active on the platform that is known for the short clips, dances and memes that can be specifically linked to TikTok.

Forum voor Democratie also has an active TikTok account. The reach achieved with TikTok is striking: a fragment of Jesse Klaver about diversity reached almost a million views , a video in which Mark Rutte responds to TikTok comments reached no less than one and a half million. Numbers that are difficult to achieve on Facebook without advertising.

Critics argue that TikTok is particularly popular among young people. Young people who may industry email list not yet have reached the age at which they are allowed to vote. However, it can be effective to use TikTok. Young people are involved in politics and hopefully will still be involved when they are allowed to vote in a few years. The TikTok videos can also be a good starting point for starting a conversation about politics with their parents, older brothers or sisters or other people in their environment who are over 18. And of course, there are also more and more TikTok users who are already allowed to vote in these elections. Perhaps for the first time.

What you can clearly see is that successful parties on TikTok have been active on the medium for a longer period of time. They have had more time to build up a following and get the hang of creating suitable content for the platform. A missed opportunity for PvdA and SP, who are absent from TikTok, and for D66 and CDA. They do have an account, but have hardly posted any content.
