I see a lot of marketers who think this way, who say yes to new company campaigns that start with an advertising first approach. I want to be clear, there are some exceptions to the rule. I’ve seen some brand new companies that fit a certain mold do really well with Instagram ads for certain types of products that appeal to that audience and don’t need pre-existing brand associations. I’ve seen some players in the Google AdWords market do just fine with it, some local businesses, some people in areas where people aren’t expected to already have knowledge and awareness of a brand in the place where they’re trying to discover them.

You have to know your audience before you put money into advertising.

That means you need to invest in organic channels — content or SEO or press and PR or sponsorships or events, what have you, anything that can get your brand name and your product names out there.

Brand advertising, in fact, can work for that. So television brand advertising, people have seen that TV brand advertising often reduces cost per click and increases engagement and click-through rates, because people have heard of you and they know who you are. Magazine and offline advertising work that way. Sometimes display advertising can work that way too.
