2021 marks the beginning of Google’s long-awaited and long-overdue shift to mobile-first indexing for all websites.

To better understand this situation, we have analyzed the search landscape to try to understand how trends on mobile and desktop have changed in recent years. We used two focus areas to guide our study:

See how traffic trends and user behavior on mobile devices compare to desktop by analyzing 1,000 most visited domains from Traffic Rank's global reports for 2018, 2019, and 2020.
To highlight the discrepancies in search results between mobile and desktop, we selected the top 50,000 keywords by search volume from Semrush’s US database and compared the search results.
Mobile vs. Desktop Study: Key Findings
Organic traffic to the world's 1,000 most visited websites grew by 22% in 2020 compared to 2019.
During that period, 66% of visits came from mobile devices.
On both mobile and desktop, bounce rates and total time on indonesia mobile database site were higher, indicating that user engagement is becoming more difficult to increase.
Only 17% of websites maintained their positions on both mobile and desktop search results, and 37% of URLs dropped out of the top 10 when the query was performed on mobile.

Global organic traffic trends
Comparing search data between the 1,000 most visited websites in the world between 2019 and 2020, we see that absolute traffic volume has grown by 22%.

These websites also attracted 10% of total global traffic in 2018, but that figure doubled to 20% by the end of 2020. This traffic was predominantly mobile. Last year, approximately 66% of traffic came from these types of devices, although the share of desktop traffic was also higher in 2020 than in 2018.

This is obviously due to the coronavirus pandemic, but at the same time, it is a clear sign of the global dominance of these sites. That is, the bigger they are, the more traffic they attract when there is an increase in searches, both on desktop and mobile.
