To put a cross on something

Post by jrineakter »

Hello, dear friends! Thank you for joining me for this new episode of the Français Authentique podcast. And today, I'm going to explain to you the meaning of a French expression well known, obviously, to French speakers, which is "faire une croix sur quelque chose".

Before that, let's talk a little about current events, because right now we're fully into the... well, the Authentic French team is fully committed to serving the members of the Authentic French Academy . Registrations are currently closed. We're working hard to improve the academy and to give all these lessons. In the academy, our members have the opportunity to talk in discussions, small Zoom meetings, with our tutors, with me, with other members of the team. And so, we give a lot of ourselves and we're also starting to prepare the next registrations which will open on April 1st.

So if you're interested, you can already go see what the academy is about. There's a link in the description, it's www.francaisauthentique.com/academie . And you can sign up for the waiting list and maybe discover all the pillars, what the content is. We have a lot of content, as well as video modules, sorts of really French documentaries that we prepare for you, grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation sheets, we have our tutor Manuel who specializes in pronunciation, lots of things for you and of course our Zoom meetings. So I really invite you to go take a look at the first link in the description.

Let's get back to the content and our thailand whatsapp number data expression, "to put a cross on something". So, we start with the verb "to do", which has a lot of meanings. It can mean to act, to accomplish, to execute an action. I think that the verb "to do", you know it, but really depending on the context, you can have very different meanings, very different significations.

A cross is something that can be physical. For example, on a piece of paper, you make two lines that cross. If you take the game "tic-tac-toe" for example, you make crosses, you make a cross and circles. So a cross, I think you see what it is, it's really to make cross... it comes from the verb "croiser" eh... to make two lines that you draw on paper cross, it's a cross.

We can make a cross for example to mark that something is finished. Imagine, if I have a list for example of actions, today, I am going to record podcasts, well I write it on my list, and when I have recorded the podcasts, I make a cross next to it to show that it is done. Or, at school, the teacher can do the roll call and call each student and say: "Okay, Johan, are you there?" I say: "Yes, I am here". And he makes a cross next to my first name, which shows that I am there.
