I find it uncivilized, such a standard LinkedIn contact request. The fact that the entire Dutch working population has an account does not mean at all that things are polite on the online rolodex. It is not uncommon for working people to be approached with: "I would like to connect with you on LinkedIn." No motive, no reason, no reason, no friendliness. Not even an emoticon that smiles apologetically.

You are not interesting
The message of such a standard request comes across as “Hi, I think I know you, but otherwise you're not really interesting.” Simply clicking 'accept' is basically answering with: “I think I know you too. Whatever.”

I am always extremely curious about the motives behind such a contact request. Why does that old fellow student suddenly want to be in my business network? Something to sell? Feared redundancy at employer? Plans for a reunion? Lonely?

Don't do it
Some requests are crystal clear about the message. Every now and then I am plagued with messages that say-without-saying: “I don’t have time to approach you personally, because my boss wants me to contact a thousand LinkedIn profiles like yours today. I don’t know why you should become a customer of our product/service, but I would appreciate it if you would accept my request as the start of a fruitful collaboration.” Sales managers: bulk acquisition based on a LinkedIn profile is never appreciated. So will you please stop doing that?

Get personal Let's send something personal with a contact request from now on? For the thread with your motives! So: "You work at a cool company, what do I have to do for a job?" Or: "Can I be your favorite supplier?" Or: "Buy a CRM package?" For all I care you can say: "Long time no see!" or "Kiss?" Definitely much more effective than a standard email. It is definitely more polite.

Because Facebook may be celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, but do we all know how things should be on social media? How should things actually be done in the virtual world? Time for some online etiquette, with a large grain of salt. Do you have an opinion too? Bring on that opinion, it will only make the internet better.
