Cities with smart city projects
Some of the most important smart city projects on the continent are being carried out in Spain. Cities such as Zaragoza and Gijón are implementing improvements to their electronic administration system, while Madrid has already created an Integrated Security and Emergency Centre (CISEM). The aim is to coordinate and organise bodies such as the Police or Samur, achieving response times of less than 8 minutes.
Bilbao is focusing its efforts on reducing its environmental impact and on the efficient use of resources such as water, placing itself in the top 5 of smart cities in our country. Málaga , for its part, is carrying out an ambitious plan to integrate its renewable energies with the electricity grid, and millions of remote meters have already been installed in Barcelona to optimize the spending of its citizens.
In Latin America, efforts are being devoted to smart linkedin data metering technologies, grid automation, electric vehicles, public lighting and distributed generation. In Medellín (Colombia) , for example, one of the largest digital transformations of the metro in the world is taking place; and in countries such as Argentina or Mexico, priority is being given to new efficient public transport models such as buses or bicycles.
The European Union wants the smart city model to be the predominant one in most cities on the continent. With this goal, the 20-20-20 objective was created , which aims to reduce primary energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by 20% and increase renewable energy consumption by 20% by this year.
In addition, specific projects have been prepared that reflect the commitment of European governing bodies to energy and environmental sustainability, within the framework of the European innovation partnership on smart cities and communities (EIP-SCC ) programme . In this way, it is hoped to improve urban life through “comprehensive solutions that focus on the specific challenges of each city in mobility, energy or transport policies”.
When it comes to contributing as citizens to the development of our smart city, it is essential that we know how to carry out responsible consumption and that we are aware of the sustainable mobility models that are available to us.
Together, we can support European and Spanish initiatives to transform our cities into sustainable ones that take into account the needs of their citizens and implement technologies that make our lives easier.
